Hythum - Port Leaton Screenshots (part duex)

Port Leaton is done enough for me to move on to another area. It's my biggest exterior and my biggest city. (update... I couldn't help myself, I've already gone back and added a few carts, merchant stalls and trees.... got to move on now.)

Oops, gotta fix that door.

  3. This is one epic city. Reminds me of something from Final Fantasy, you know?

Maybe it's the airships, but those screens have an essence of high adventure - one I would like to go on!

  4. Thanks. Hopefully there will be a pretty striking contrast as players move from one city to the next. I'm trying to give each city/state a unique feel. I was actually thinking about that while on your blog today. Could you imagine a more striking transition then moving from this city to the graveyard you are working on, or vice versa. Wow. That would be quite a switch.

Your area design is fantastic so the compliment is greatly appreciated.

  5. I like it! The "new" Port Leaton has the right feel to it and I can imagine how great it look be when it's populated with all the commoners , guards and other NPCs.

I must say that for every screen shots you show us one can see how you master the toolset more and more. I really like the slope of the street,a thing I have big problems to do properly.

  6. The slope of the street was time consuming and tedious but not too hard really. Custom content (i.e. airships... that's hard)

I just set the flatten tool to '2' with an outer value of 0 and incremented it by .5 for each 'row' of the slope. There are a few places where it's still bumpy, not on the slope but particularly near the bottom edges but it's not too bad. I'm happy with it.

I'm glad you liked it. Given the quality of your work, that is very high praise.

  7. I love the layout of the city. I like how you play with different levels, and find it brilliant how you used the city walls. If I could chance one tiny suggestion (if you have the chance to get to that sort of stuff), it would be to "break up" the pavement texture here and there.

Looks great otherwise, and quite epic indeed, as jclef said.

  8. Thanks E.C. I would like to break it up more, and have more variance in other areas, I wanted this city to look BIG, bright and bold.

The first city you enter is very warm and friendly with a very natural feel to it. Burnham Crossing the second, is gray, dark, dirty and overcrowded. Hopefully this stands out as a big contrast. I felt some areas were too open and have added carts, markets, etc.. to break it up. I played with other pavement types and was't entirely happy. I'll keep experiementing.

    I really appreciate your feedback.

  9. @E.C. I made some additional adjustments to the city based on your feedback. Primarily I added additional 'curbs' here and there to round thing out. The screen shots I posts are also missing carts, merchant stalls, and other odds and ends I've added. Your advice was very helpful. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
